AI, Data & Privacy
Caution - data processed in the United States
This robot sends data to cloud servers in the United States. For EU residents, this means personal data is transferred outside the EU. While some companies use Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) or other legal mechanisms to comply with GDPR for transatlantic transfers, the data is not under direct EU jurisdiction. EU residents should review the manufacturer's Data Processing Agreement and privacy policy carefully.
How to keep it private
LIFX bulbs can be fully controlled via the documented LAN protocol without internet. Home Assistant and other local platforms can manage LIFX bulbs entirely on your local network. However, the LIFX app itself requires cloud connectivity for most features beyond basic on/off.
Available privacy controls
Use the documented LAN protocol with Home Assistant or other local platforms to control bulbs without any cloud communication
LIFX collects minimal personal data beyond basic device usage patterns and lighting schedules
Apple HomeKit integration enables local control through your Apple Home hub without cloud dependency
For best privacy, use the LIFX LAN protocol with Home Assistant or similar local platforms instead of the LIFX cloud app. This keeps all communication on your local network. The documented LAN protocol makes LIFX one of the more integration-friendly smart bulbs. If you prefer Apple ecosystem, HomeKit control also works locally. US-based cloud with limited EU-specific options makes the cloud path less ideal for EU users.
What this means for EU residents
LIFX (now owned by Feit Electric, US-based) processes cloud data on US servers. The LIFX app requires an account for cloud features. Minimal personal data collection beyond device usage patterns and schedules.
